Setting for Roll of Thunder

The story takes place in Mississippi in the 1930's "In 1930..."(pg 7) "Attempting to keep the rusty Mississippi dust..."(pg 3) . Cassie and her brothers (Christopher-John, Little Man, and Stacey) face segregation in school. They also just get old trash (like messed up books) from white people. "12 September 1933 Very poor nigra..." (pg 25).

I think that I would act the same as Cassie and her brothers. They don"t deserve to be segregated just because the color of their skin is different. I might have done something like they did with the bus. "The bus emitted a tremendous crack and careened drunkenly into our trap..." (pg 54)

Mississippi entered the Great Depression later than the rest of the nation. The 52,000 jobs in Mississippi had fell in 1929 to 28,000 in 1933. Bank deposits dropped from $101 million to $49 million in three years.

I think that Mildred Taylor made the setting of Mississippi in the 1930's like it really was. When Mississippi was in the Great Depression, life was very hard. Many people lost their jobs and people lost a lot of money. It was hard to pay bills and get through the day. Mildred Taylor shoes how hard the life was in Mississippi in the 1930's.
