Haiku for Rain

Today the rain falls
The rain falls softly... tap, tap
Now, I love the rain!!

Ode to Snow

Snow falls on the ground
Swirling and swirling all around.
Trees are covered in a blanket of white
People look at the sight.

Snow falls on the ground
People scurry all around.
Snow is in your hair
With stiffness and cold in the air.

Snow is all around
The sun is setting across the ground
Lights light up the city bright
Everyone says "What a sight!"

Roll of Thunder

Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is about a family called the Logan’s. They face many harsh things. These things include racism and humiliation. The Logan family still stand together strong and they are able to show what they believe in.

The Logan family are able to show Mama didn’t want her children to go to the Wallace store. When they did, Mama didn’t punish them. Instead she took them to the Berry’s. The children saw Mr. Berry and felt uncomfortable. When they got back to the wagon Mama explained to them what happened to Mr. Berry. “The Wallace’s did that children. They poured kerosene over Mr. Berry and his nephews and lit them afire…” (pg 98). Then Mama went to people’s houses. “Mama spoke of the bad influences of the Wallace’s…” (pg 98) The Logan family are still able to stand up for what they believe in.

The Logan family stand together strong in many ways, like in the mercantile. “Mr. Barnett walked to another counter and began filling the order, but before he finished, a white woman called… the woman handed him a list twice as long as T.J’s and he began filling it…”(pg 110) When Cassie asked Mr. Barnett about T.J’s list to see if he had forgotten he got very angry at her. “‘Whose little nigger is this?!’ Mr. Barnett yelled… ‘I ain’t nobody’s little nigger!’ I screamed…” (pg 111) everybody comforts Cassie a little bit and she finally learns to understand the difference between black and white people. The Logan family also stand together when the night men are involved, like when the night men came to their house. “The lead car swung into the muddy driveway and a shadowy outlined by the headlights of the car behind him stepped out. The man walked slowly up the drive. I stopped breathing…” (pg 67) The night men are a dangerous group of people. Part of their danger is revealed when Mr. Morrison tells the Logan family a story about his family. “They

High school is different from middle school in many ways. In high school, there are many more tests to prepare for. There are not-so-important-tests. There are also tests-that-will-decide-your-future tests. These very important tests are the Reigions and the SAT's. These test help colleges know if they want to accept you or not. In middle school, you don't have to take as many serious tests. The most amount of important tests that you may take in a year in middle school may be 4. There are many more Regions than state tests. High school seems harder than middle school.

High school is very difficult. High schoolers have to move from class to class. They only have about five minutes to do so. Sometimes, they need to go from floor to floor.

Setting for Roll of Thunder

The story takes place in Mississippi in the 1930's "In 1930..."(pg 7) "Attempting to keep the rusty Mississippi dust..."(pg 3) . Cassie and her brothers (Christopher-John, Little Man, and Stacey) face segregation in school. They also just get old trash (like messed up books) from white people. "12 September 1933 Very poor nigra..." (pg 25).

I think that I would act the same as Cassie and her brothers. They don"t deserve to be segregated just because the color of their skin is different. I might have done something like they did with the bus. "The bus emitted a tremendous crack and careened drunkenly into our trap..." (pg 54)

Mississippi entered the Great Depression later than the rest of the nation. The 52,000 jobs in Mississippi had fell in 1929 to 28,000 in 1933. Bank deposits dropped from $101 million to $49 million in three years.

I think that Mildred Taylor made the setting of Mississippi in the 1930's like it really was. When Mississippi was in the Great Depression, life was very hard. Many people lost their jobs and people lost a lot of money. It was hard to pay bills and get through the day. Mildred Taylor shoes how hard the life was in Mississippi in the 1930's.

Figuritive Language in Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry

Metaphors: I gazed at the pond, glassy, gray and calm.(pg 94) A cold wind rose, biting through my jacket. (pg 95) ...only an inhuman guttural wheezing (pg 97)

Similies:

Mama

Mama cares for all of her children. She values education. Mama is a teacher.

Mama wishes for her husband to be home longer than he usually is.

""Sunday?!" mama exclaimed, "Today's already Saturday!"" (pg 26)

Mama worries about her children. She keeps some things from them like why Cassie was treated the way she was.

"... No baby, because she's white..."
